The Destination - Mauritius occupies the most beautiful section of the Indian Ocean. It covers an area of about 1,860 square km (720 square miles) and situated some 2,000 km (1242 miles) off the south East coast of Africa. The 330 km long coastline of Mauritius with white sandy beaches and transparent lagoon is entirely surrounded by the world’s largest unbroken coral reef.

Population - Population of Mauritius is estimated at 1.2 million with a density of 589.0 people per sq km. It comprises of different races, cultures and religions. Mauritians are descendants of immigrants from the Indian sub-continent, Africa, Europe and China.

Language - Official language in Mauritius is English. But most Mauritians are multilingual, being fluent in French and local dialect, Creole. Mauritians also speak their native language such as Hindi, Chinese, Urdu, etc .

 

Currency - The currency of Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee. Mauritian Rupee (MRs) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of MRs2000, 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10, and Coins in denominations of MRs10, 5 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, and 5 cents.

When to go - Mauritius receives maximum tourists during Christmas to New Year period. Though Mauritius doesn’t have a strict high or low season the period between December and March is considered best for diving in the clearest waters; period between June and August is best for surfing; and October to April is excellent for big game fishing.

How to Get there - The island is easily accessible as it is well connected by many international airlines and shipping companies. There are two paved airports in Mauritius. Buses and slow moving taxis are easily available for getting around and seeing the many beautiful sceneries of the place.

Must See -

1. Pamplemousse Botanical Gardens - A heaven for the fans of natural beauty. This grapefruit garden is a treasure trove of many exotic plants.

2. Chamarel & Grand Basin - Visit the unique colored dunes of Chamarel - the 'Seven Colored Earth'. See mounds of yellow, red, blue and green colored earth. Enjoy the magnificent view of the Black River Gorges. Grand Bassin is one of the island's two natural lakes.

3. Ile Aux Cerfs - A beautiful resort on a Robinson Crusoe-like island with miles of fine white beaches & crystal clear waters. Here you will have plenty of water sport facilities, go swimming or just relax on the beach.

4. Underwater Walk - An underwater tour through the perfectly safe reef is a must in Mauritius. It offers you the chance to discover the underwater world from within, and make your childhood fantasies come true: a slow-motion cavort in the kingdom of mermaids!

 
5. Port Louis - The capital of Mauritius that exhibits a plethora of color, activity, smell, sights and sounds.

6. Grand Baie - Nestled in a picturesque bay at the northern tip of the island, this small fishing village in the center for yachting, water-skiing, windsurfing and many other sports.

7. Domaine Les Pailles - Spread over 1,500 hectares, Domaine Les Pailles is an elaborate cultural centre that includes facilities for horse-drawn carriage and train rides, plus a working replica of an ox-powered sugar mill, a rum distillery, an herb garden, a natural spring and a children's play area.

8. Curepipe - A pleasant Mauritian town, surrounded by lush green countryside as well as a few remaining tea fields from which the Mauritian vanilla tea is produced. Few hours away from Curepipe is the spectacular Trou aux Cerfs, an extinct crater 85m deep and more than 200m wide, from the rim of which one enjoys an extensive view of the island.

9. Mahebourg - Once a busy port, this historic town is one of the main fishing centers of Mauritius. Here you will find a Naval Museum housed in the French colonial mansion with a handicraft village built in typical island architecture in the premises of the museum.

10. Rivière Noire Gorges - Situated next to Plaine Champagne comprising of the banks cut out of the mountains by the Rivière Noire. The area was designated as a protected natural reserve by the government and permission is required for hiking through the forest, though not to drive through.
